A fifties classic in Manchester

Posted on Tue. 26/08/2008 22:00. Categories: United Kingdom | Manchester

Manchester's famous Royal Exchange Theatre is to stage a new production of A Taste of Honey this autumn - 50 years on from when it was first seen by the public.

The Jo Combes-directed play will run from November 12th to December 6th at the city centre venue.

Sheila Delaney's script begins as a love story set in Salford, but goes on to challenge the values of 1950s Britain, touching on controversial issues such as race and sexuality.

Although it debuted at a small theatre in London, A Taste of Honey went on to become one of the most influential post-war British plays and was eventually made into a hugely successful feature film.

Regeneration in the north-west means that the backdrop depicted by Delaney no longer exists, but the production is sure to evoke memories of the time before Manchester and Salford formed a thriving modern city-region.

Book into one of the best hotels in Manchester and see what else the new look city has to offer.

A trip to the Imperial War Museum North or the Museum of Science and Industry may prove enlightening, but those with more exclusive tastes may prefer to head to the luxurious Manchester235 Casino to see if they can spot a footballer or actress.
