Beer delights in Antwerp

Posted on Thu. 08/05/2008 18:30. Categories: Belgium | bars

Antwerp's De Groote Witte Arend, translated as The Great White Eagle, is most notable for its fantastic array of local beer.

Boasting 80 Belgian varieties of the beverage, these include 10 draught beers from the tap.

But that's not all, as the food served perfectly meets the comfort food requirements of a venue such as this.

Traditional local dishes are on the menu, including roast duck with morels and cherries, as well as rabbit cooked in beer with chips and salad on the side.

The pretty courtyard, great for when the weather's nice, is shared with the next-door chapel.

And this isn't where the religious links end - the building's oldest part was once a nunnery and parts of the interior still reflect its monastic past.

Antwerp annually hosts the Beer Passion Festival, a three-day event taking place in the Old Town, offering visitors the chance to sample over 150 different types of beer.
