Luxury for less in Budapest

Posted on Wed. 26/11/2008 23:00. Categories: Hungary | Budapest

Budapest is well known for its spas, but what about its hotels? There are a range of luxury hotels in Budapest for a fraction of the price of some of the hotels inside the eurozone. If you are travelling on a budget and you want to get away this year, Budapest is recommended.

Just how much does it cost?

Exchanging back to sterling, the price of a two-course evening meal for two is £40, a cup of coffee in one of the cafes is £1 and a bottle of beer is around £1.60. Apetito is a nice place to visit in the Castle District with a traditional menu and wines recommended by an in-house sommelier. Alternatively, get your fill along the River Danube at the contemporary Spoon and Cafe Lounge, which provides gorgeous cocktails and stunning views of the Castle District, which is lit up at night.

What about getting there?

Hungary is easily accessible from other parts of Europe by coach, with some well priced deals, if you do not mind travelling the distance and have the time. However, if you want to go on holiday in a hurry Malev Airlines would be just the ticket. The Hungarian airline runs return flights from £110 per person.

Where do I stay in style?

There are plenty of luxury hotels in Budapest, which will not break the bank. St George Residence is a five-star hotel that offers apartments over plain bedrooms. Each of the 26 suites comes with bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen, to make guests feel home from home and they do not cost the earth. Some of the suites even come with Jacuzzi bathrooms for that Budapest spa feel.

Tell me more about St George

St George's Residence is the patron saint of putting your feet up. A stay here takes travellers back in time to 14th century Budapest, which was when the three properties the hotel is converted from, were built. They have had various uses over the years, including law courts, a museum and an inn before being renovated by its present owners in 2006, opening as a hotel in 2007.

What is there to see?

The hotel is in the historic Buda Castle district with its ancient streets. It is a Unesco heritage site so every step you take could have been trodden by the invading Mongols or Turks. In the district is a range of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy the view from the Toth Arpad Promenade or the Fisherman's Bastion and Palace Square. Soak up the atmosphere of Buda and escape the bustle of Pest. It is only 20 minutes away for guests, if you want to up the tempo.

And the spas?

After wandering the museums and ice-skating in the city park, rest your weary body at the Mandala Day Spa. It has a wide range of beauty and massage treatments. There are thermal spas, cold dips in steaming hot outdoor pools and warm waters. Take a look around, splash back and enjoy the view.

Budapest gets luxury revamp

Posted on Tue. 04/11/2008 23:00. Categories: Hungary | Budapest

A luxury hotel chain is expanding into the hotels in Budapest by developing a 200 bedroom five star golf resort. The Corinthia Budapest Gate Hotel will be the third CHI Hotels & Resorts in the city in addition to five star offerings Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal and Ramada Plaza Budapest.

The Corinthia Budapest Gate Hotel consists of 280 acres of land, which includes a golf course, and comes in addition to a tranche of investments made by the Maltese company in Egypt and Russia.

Why Budapest?

This city is steeped in culture, dating back to the 13th century when King Bela ordered more fortifications after the invasion of Hungary by the Mongols. The whole of the Andrassy has been recognised as a world heritage site by Unesco, which includes the Castle District (one of King Bela's fortresses) and the embankments of the River Danube. This year Budapest city has been nominated as the Best City Break Destination at the British Travel Awards 2008. Stay in one of the best hotels in Budapest to take advantage of the thermal baths, museums and Buda Castle.

What's on?

The Turkish city has plenty of events all year round that are easily accessible from the affordable accommodation in Budapest. It has a celebrated opera scene and good museums and galleries. Showing off the antique and contemporary in November is the Budapest Art Fair, which has been described as one of the most significant art exhibitions and shows off traditional Hungarian paintings as well as more modern affairs. This year sees the introduction of books and films on art history in the Auditorium of Mucsarnok. Watch the staging of improvisational Lifegame, which has appeared in London and Stockholm. In total 70 galleries present the best of their work in the Art Fair at the end of November.

Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal

CHI Hotels & Resorts transformed the old Grand Hotel Royal into a new and improved five star venue, located in the centre of the city. The architecture has been made even more elegant, the exquisite interior has been carefully restored and it now sports luxurious spa facilities, which make the Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal the envy of most of the best hotels in Budapest.

The spa includes a 15 metre swimming pool, relaxation areas, sauna, Jacuzzis, steam baths and tropical rain showers. Pampering ranges from Niagara bathtubs to seaweed and mud on top of various massage and therapies. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms.

Ramada Plaza Budapest

This five star facility offers views of Margaret Island over the River Danube like many of the best hotels in Budapest. The Ramada Plaza Budapest is situated on the other side to the Buda area over the Arpad Bridge and also offers a thermal spa with therapeutic treatments and is renowned for provisions with natural health.

It is a 300-bedroom hotel with Ambrosia Restaurant, which serves Hungarian cuisine, and the River Bar for cocktails and champagne. On the last Sunday of the month join guests for a continental evening of trying each other's national dishes in a Sunday brunch buffet with free flowing champers.

Budapest pays tribute to graffiti artist

Posted on Wed. 20/08/2008 22:00. Categories: Hungary | Budapest

He painted the USA, walls around the world and even the body of singer Grace Jones. Now his work is being exhibited in Budapest.

Keith Haring was a graffiti legend – after studying graphic design in Pittsburgh.

Had he not died of Aids he would have been 50 years old this year.

But sadly he died two years after he was diagnosed in 1990.

To commemorate his contribution to the art scene, the Ludwig Museum is hosting an exhibition of his famous work until November 16th.

A pal of Andy Warhol, he travelled the world to see other graffiti artists, meet more people and check out the world of pop art.

Some of his most famous characters the 'radiant baby' and the 'barking dog' are still widely-known today.

The show will display 11 of his paintings from between 1979 and 1989, and 80 of his graphics.

Haring's philosophy was to get art to as wide an audience as possible.

He was famous for always sticking with the original idea and never altering any earlier sketches.

MTV filmed him drawing on stage with Duran Duran keyboardist and friend Nick Rhodes.

Ludwig Museum has a rich collection of American pop art and work from German, French and North American artists active in the 1980s.

There's also plenty of Hungarian art from the 1990s.

Travel News brought to you by Eurobookings, the experts in cheap hotel bookings for all major European cities including Budapest.

Vidam – literally meaning happy – Park boasts 50 fun filled rides and attractions, with some dating back earlier than World War II.

There is a quaint merry-go-round that is more than a hundred years and Europe's longest wooden rollercoaster at one km, which was built 70 years ago.

It's slow-paced for children - the Park even has a mini ride section for toddlers next door – but suitably up tempo in parts for thrill seekers.

Adults can enjoy the Looping Star rollercoaster and Super Boat slide which drops riders from a height of 17 metres, flying seven metres through the air, into water.

Vidam Park is open until November from 10.00 or 11.00, local time, until 18.00 or 21.00 depending on the season.

It is 300 Forint or £1 entry and 5,000 for a book of 40 tickets, which is wise to get because some rides are worth three tickets.

Go to Godor for best of Budapest music scene

Posted on Thu. 24/07/2008 22:00. Categories: Hungary | Budapest

Travel News brought to you by Eurobookings, the experts in cheap hotel bookings for all major European cities including Budapest.

World music bars do not come much better than this "hole" in the Hungarian capital.

The unflattering name translation does no justice to the amazing venue, which oozes cool with a glass roof and generously spacious interior.

Located in Elizabeth Square, close to Deak Ter in downtown Budapest, if offers the best performance space for music as diverse as Romany rap, jazz and new local talent.

During the summer take advantage of free concerts on offer in the square, before heading downstairs to the club to continue the beats on a proper dancefloor.

Godor also acts as an exhibition space for up-and-coming artists and its grand entrance reflects this with a flank of contemporary sculptures leading the way to the door.

Other good venues to hear world music in Europe include flamenco nights at La Carnoeria in Seville and acoustic fado at Mesa de Frades in Lisbon.
