Island life in Germany

An island break in the middle of Europe may not be an obvious choice for holidaymakers but a trip to Germany's largest is a travel treat.

Rugen is situated in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and has more tourists per resident than any other location in Germany.

The majority of these flock to main resort Binz to enjoy the sun, sea and picturesque promenade that once earned it the tag 'Nice of the North'.

As well as the ample coastline, inland is also worth exploring, either by foot on one of the many cliff and nature reserve walks or by catching the circuitous steam train.

For a more unusual Rugen experience, visit Prora - the holiday camp built by the Nazis to accommodate 20,000 party stalwarts. It is now largely empty but still offers a fascinating insight into the regime.

Hiddensee is another island option in Germany. Close to Rugen and totally car-free, it boasts a more tranquil holiday experience.ADNFCR-1382-ID-18674688-ADNFCR
