London goes up in smoke

Tobacco machines pumped out 300 cigarettes every minute in the 1880s for nicotine-addicted Londoners, according to an exhibition in the capital.

The Museum of London examines the capital city's bitter-sweet relationship with tobacco in a show that runs until September 21st.

England was introduced to tobacco in the mid-16th century with Elizabethan explorer, Walter Raleigh, popularised the drug, glamourising pipe smoking.

The industry grew out of London and it wasn't long before a large part of the city was hooked.

The expo features images of smoking celebrities alongside archaic adverts with outlandish claims, such as cigarettes "will not affect your throat ".

Gruesome artifacts such as tiny toy cigarettes for dolls houses and dainty, ornate pipes are set to spark a lot of interest as the show's run comes to a close.

The Museum is open every day from 10.00 to 18.00 BST and entry is free.

Don't miss the tube train filled with cigarette butts from one square mile of stressed out city streets – one more reason to give up.
