Celebrities are pulling their socks up for charity by taking part in the Great North Run – and you can too!

The 13 km race goes from Newcastle to South Shields. Since its inception in 1981 organisers say the race has attracted more people than any other run in Europe.

Fun runners and the Paula Radcliffes of this world set off on October 1st, from 10.40, local time.

It is unclear yet whether Radcliffe will run this year after competing in the Olympics in Beijing. However, she would be a welcome sight.

Paula made her come back at the Great North Run last year following a 21-month absence from running following the birth of her daughter.

Famous faces that have confirmed include the likes of former Olympic medallist, Kriss Akabusi, former Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman, radio DJ Scott Mills, commentator Jim Rosenthal and many more.

An expected 47,000 runners will go under starter's orders, following the central motorway in the city centre and getting a good view of local landmarks like the new "winking eye" Gateshead Millennium Bridge on their way to the finish.
