Holidaymakers should spend at least three nights away to take time to relax, according to a recent survey.
A poll of 3,000 by travel specialist Keycamp, found tourists do not wind down until two days, nine hours and 25 minutes into a holiday.
This means it takes until almost the end of your third day before you feel like you are on vacation.
Marketing manager Dave McKenna of Keycamp said: "People get so carried away with planning and researching our holiday, it seems we forget the reason we're going on a break."
Holidaymakers spent most of their first day booking, preparing and travelling, and most of their second, recovering, unpacking and settling in.
Most people take twice as long to choose a destination as they do away from home at 18 days - then take six hours to find the right place, another eight to pack and an extra two to get washed and dressed.
Prague, Barcelona and Dublin feature among the top three favourite locations in Europe for short breaks, according to a study by Travel Call Breaks.
